This is my first time writing my blog from the comfort of a plane. When I say comfort, I mean that I’m in the middle seat between two masked gentlemen. It’s a sarcastic comfort if you know what I mean. Nevertheless, how awesome right?
I’m so proud of myself for deciding to travel and then getting on it. Of all the trips I’ve made, I would have to classify this one as the most daring. I actually flew from my home city of Medellin to Bogota (the capital of Colombia) all by myself.
It sounds like nothing but it was a big deal for me. I’m fluent in Spanish but I’m intimidated by all the Colombian protocols and slang terms and therefore I considered it a bold move.
I also went paragliding on 12/31 which was literally the best way to end 2020! I’m excited to work on that vlog as soon as I get home.
In the meantime, I was thinking about the transition between today, the last day of 2020 and tomorrow which marks the beginning of a new season. YES. It’s a new season for me and for YOU too. Believe it.
I’m not very superstitious. Actually I’m not superstitious at all. I don’t believe in the 12 grapes at midnight, the gold-colored underwear or running with a suitcase around the block. None of that is going to get me an amazing new year.
What will is my faith, my vision and my hard work. So what I’ll be focusing on today is the transition. Hear me out.
Driving with the Windows Down
When traveling to Medellin you land in an airport outside of the city called Jose Maria Cordoba which is located in Rio Negro. Rio Negro is about 30 minutes from Medellin driving through the “Tunel del Oriente” which is a tunnel carved within 15 miles of mountain and then down many curved roads with steep hills. Whether it’s day time or night time, the views are absolutely stunning.
Since we are still in the middle of a pandemic and I landed on Christmas Day, the city was in lockdown for about 48 hours. My cousin who picked me up drove us on empty streets. It was ghost town in Medellin that day; closed businesses and no public transportation. Every so often I could see people gathered in their balconies or just outside their homes with neighbors.
We didn’t stop in Medellin though. One of my relatives bought a house outside of the city in a place called Sopetran. This town is what they call “tierra caliente” which means hot land… an appropriate term I must say.
Once we drove through Medellin and started up the opposite side of the mountain my cousin lowered the windows of his car and explained that where we were headed to was going to be very hot.
Hot? – I thought. I’m from Miami baby, we invented hot.
Yeaaaaa… it’s not the same.
He told me that he tends to drive to Sopetran with the windows down so that he can transition into the weather. If he keeps the car’s air conditioning on then when he arrives and gets out of the car he gets overwhelmed by the abundance of heat. Driving this way helps him gradually transition and avoid a massive headache.
As we passed majestic mountains and incredible views, I slowly began to feel it. The overwhelming heat started to fade my makeup away and give me a significant desire to drink a lot of water. When we arrived, I quickly changed into my bathing suit. They weren’t kidding about tierra caliente.
When I think about January 1st 2020 I don’t think about drastic changes but gradual transitions. The last couple of months I’ve been driving with my windows down getting ready for this new season. Maybe you have as well or maybe you have to put those windows down today. Wherever you are, you are not late… you just need to get started.
Here are my two cents on gradual 2021 transitions:
New Season, New Outfit
I think the first thing we need to do is change our outfit. When I left Miami on Christmas Day it was so cold that I wore jeans and a thick, red turtleneck sweater. This was going to dehydrate me in Sopetran. I needed to change my outfit.
I find that I set myself up for success when I dress for success. By this I don’t mean that I have to wear a suit or heels. I just have to feel pretty. Yeap. Don’t judge me. If I feel like a million bucks I’m going to produce like a million bucks.
So one thing that I’ve been doing lately is getting slowly and consistently changing my wardrobe. You don’t need to go on a shopping spree and spend hundreds you don’t have. You just need to slowly throw out the old to make space for the new.
For quite some time now I have been intentionally getting myself something new on almost each one of my paychecks. Sometimes I can spend more than others but even if it’s just a $15 blouse, it’s something new I can wear that I didn’t have before.
Likewise, every time I do laundry I find something that I know doesn’t make me feel beautiful and I either give it away or straight up throw it out.
You are your biggest investment. You need to look and feel like 2021 is the best year you’re ever going to have. You don’t need a drastic change, you need a gradual transition. That is where habits are made.
Do It Scared
Ya’ll let me tell you how paragliding happened:
The day before flying back to Miami I was in the car with my cousin and we were heading home after visiting one of my grandmas. In the middle of casual conversation he suggested that it would have been nice if I went paragliding.
I agreed and told him that probably next time because there wasn’t enough time left. To which he answered… “Yes there is, do it tomorrow morning.”
Really? – I thought to myself… but the words that actually came out of my mouth were: “Let’s go!”
So he called his contact on the spot and arranged a 9:00am flight.
When we got home and I shared our plan with my aunts, a couple of them asked me if I wasn’t scared. To all of them I replied the same way: “Uno hace las cosas con todo y miedo.”
Things are done scared.
I remember back in May 2020 when I was planning on launching my blog. Do you think I wasn’t scared? I was. There was a time where I wanted to be as far away from the public eye as possible. I didn’t want anybody to look to me for any kind of motivation. I was done being a person of influence because I was done not meeting people’s expectations and beating myself up because of it.
I did it anyway.
I know there is something you want to accomplish this new year and to that I want to tell you… do it scared! Don’t let fear stop you. Don’t let what people think stop you. Nobody has the right to tell you that this is not your time to shine.
Don’t leave for tomorrow what you can do today. I can’t emphasize action enough.
Buy the ticket
Arrange the meeting
Make the phone call
Buy the course
Read the book
The other day I was with a friend that runs his own business. He had stumbled upon a song that he liked and looked up the artist through socials. He wrote him on the spot telling him he wanted to work with him. He showed me the text.
You know what happened next? The guy said yes.
Mind frikin’ blown. I told him I wanted to be like him when I grew up. Haha
I still have a lot to learn and my journey has only begun but what I know I do have is the willingness to be taught, the humbleness to admit I don’t know it all and the drive to take action.
I’m excited to continue this journey with you.
Welcome to 2021! Create a life you love… a life by YOU!
